We weren't sure which hire package to choose. In the end, we went for the Comfort package because it included extra paintballs as a group bonus.
Our group of twelve arrived at around 14:00 to play Gotcha, also known as paintball. First came the paperwork: payment, waivers and so on. Then the friendly team welcomed us into the hall downstairs. There were just a few things left to do before we could start.
A member of staff checked our IDs, then explained the safety rules, how to use the markers, the rules of the game and the procedure for filling the compressed-air cylinders.
They highlighted three basic rules. First, barrel covers had to stay on outside the playing area to catch an accidentally discharged paintball. Second, masks had to be worn on the field. Third, we were told never to pick up paintballs from the ground. Dirt and grit can damage a marker and make reused paintballs unsafe. It all made sense.
Finally, we received our equipment and paintballs and were ready to play.
Alma Park had around 1,550 m² of playing space, which could be divided into up to three smaller fields. We could take turns with other groups or play against them.
In the end, we spent about two hours playing. We'd been a little worried beforehand about whether hits would hurt and leave bruises. In our group's experience, it was less daunting than we'd expected, although we certainly felt the impacts. Paintball hits can hurt and cause bruising, so follow the staff's instructions and the site's minimum-distance rules.
For anyone who would prefer a different game, Alma Park also offers laser tag. It uses infrared signals instead of paintballs, so there are no paintball impacts. The arena described in this article covered 950 m² and accommodated up to thirty players. Depending on bookings, you could also play against other groups. Check the participation requirements when choosing an activity.
We had a brilliant day.
Whenever a question or problem came up, a friendly member of staff was there to help. The large playing area and the chance to switch fields kept things varied.
The journey from Duisburg was well worth it. We'll definitely be back!
